Long Range Communications in DIL Environments

Summary

The XRI-400 is capable of crossbanding disparate communications networks. Specific radio frequencies may be inoperable in contested tactical environments due to environmental or intentional disruption. By combining Trellisware’s TSM Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) system with a long-range radio through the REDCOM XRI-400, operators can engage within contested zones while maintaining contact with Operations Centers without replacing the entire communications system. 

Challenge

Tactical situations in urban environments present a unique challenge for operators due to the numerous sources of radio interference. This can prevent contact with Operations Centers and communication between operators or units. Few means exist to combat intentional and environmental disruption. The ones most frequently used are providing operators with multiple radios and MANET systems.     

Limitations 

While MANET systems are extremely effective for these environments, their implementation can be expensive and relatively limited. As MANET systems are generally Software-Defined Radios (SDRs), they are incompatible with traditional radios, meaning they may not be capable of connecting operators with their Operations Centers. Having the MANET system connected to the XRI provides operators with additional communication avenues, reducing the risk of communications being completely severed. 

The REDCOM Solution 

Operators can enter a contested area and maintain direct communication with the Operations Center by utilizing radios compatible with Trellisware’s TSM system, two XRI-400s, high-powered relays, and a combat vehicle. One XRI-400 is connected to the TSM-enabled radios and a high-powered radio inside the combat vehicle. The second XRI-400 is installed at the Operations center with a compatible high-powered radio and any available hand-held radios. This crossbanding solution circumvents the MANET system’s technological and network incompatibilities without requiring a complete rip-and-replace of the existing communications system.
